In the Summer we got six chicks from my daughter's friend's brother. Five of them turned out to be cockerels, but fortunately he let us take four of them back (and did comment on the fact that we'd fattened them up nicely so I suspect they were destined for the pot!).
The cockerel we kept had to have a name change from Lottie to Lotto.
Time went on and three of the new hens turned out to be cockerels too, so a couple of days ago we changed them as well and hopefully these are all going to be girls.
Meet Lotto, Bree (four of the original ones were named after Desperate Housewives), Penny, Rosetta, Violet and Octavia :
They're getting on really well together, and a couple of days before they arrived Bree (or maybe Penny) started laying! Yay!
I wish you all the best for 2011, Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and your family and let's hope you get lots of lovely fresh eggs in 2011.

Hey LBM, thankyou for visiting and commenting.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family and may you get lots of beautiful eggs from your girls.
They are lovely photos and Lotto is one handsome rooster. Looks like they have a lovely area in which to free range. Our little brood of chicks are coming along nicely, I always refer to them as the girls, fingers crossed.....
I loved your idea about having the house neat as a pin on December 31st, hey it's worth a try isn't it?
Well whatever 2011 brings I hope it's a good one for you all.....
Happy New Year! Lovely birds. Hope you get some eggs for 2011! Jacs x

ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful birds. Happy New Year (and lots of eggs!)
ReplyDeleteI have been wanting to raise hens for a couple of years now, but I live in a village and it's not allowed. My mother (who grew up on a farm) thinks I'm crazy. She always had to gather the eggs and hated every minute of it. Oh well.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your ladies (or gents).
Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThere's just something so cosy about seeing photos of hens clucking around isn't there? I hope you have an egg-filled year.
