Feathered friends

As soon as we parked up this trailer of dead branches a Wood Pigeon seized the opportunity to use the twigs to make a nest.
It didn't take long to build, but I think it is just twigs, no soft lining of feathers or moss

I missed the baby Blue Tits leaving the nest.  One day the parents were still feeding them and when I went out the next afternoon they were gone.  I thought they would be around the willow tree where the parents went all the time or in the hedge but I haven't seen them.

This was taken a couple of days before, when a Blue Tit and a Robin were making a right racket.  I don't know if they were having a face off or if it was just because the cat was there and they were warning everyone!  The sun's shining on the Blue Tit but he's straight opposite the Robin on the far left, you can click on the photo for a better view

Donna kindly asked how Lotto and the hens were (following a fox attack).
Bree and Octavia are back to normal apart from needing a few more feathers.  Unfortunately Lotto didn't improve, in fact he deteriorated and sadly we had to say goodbye to him last week.

  4. He was such a handsome boy, bless him :o(

No, I don't think blue tits and robins argue, so they were probably warning that a cat was close. They're noisy aren't they? :o)

Pigeons are funny. they don't line their nests at all. And some of them even just lay their eggs on something flat such as a window ledge or roof, with no nesting material at all! Honestly i don't know how their chicks stay in 'em! (or on the ledges!)

We used to keep lots of different birds when I was young, and my dads pigeons would often by- pass a cosy straw nesting box and just lay their eggs on the loft floor lol.

Have a great week Georgia, and thankyou for sharing Lottos sad news and picture with us. xx

  5. Farewell Lotto, you were a very handsome fellow, so sorry you didn't recover after the attack. You will be missed .

Wonderful pic of the pigeon on it's nest. Perhaps you could leave some fabric and yarn scraps amongst the pile of branches so she could do some interior decorating..........

Our Robins are seasonal only here during Winter. Do yours stay around all year? Beautiful little birds, I do love them.

  6. So sorry to read about the fox attack and the loss of Lotto. We have placed some little feeder cups near our holly hedge and the blue tits, great tits and robins love them and seem to feed together. What an enterprising pigeon:)

  7. I am sorry about Lotto - it is so distressing, one of the worst things about keeping hens.

  8. Poor Lotto :(

I know robins are super territorial so perhaps it was having a little scrap with the blue tit?

  11. First off, I am so sorry you have lost your handsome Lotto, who looked so like my Errol. Very sad to lose chickens to a predator. Lovely photo of him.

And it took me a while to find the Blue Tit in that photo, but I did. And the Wood Pigeon is lovely.
