On Ilkley Moor bah t'at

Yesterday we caught the train to Ilkley in the Yorkshire Dales.
It's the first time I've been to Ilkley which is a lovely town.  I was surprised that only a very short walk from the station and we were on Ilkley Moor (the post title is an old Yorkshire song meaning 'on Ilkley Moor without a hat').
It had forecast rain but it stayed dry all day so we had a lovely long walk

How gorgeous does this purple heather look with the rocks and green grass?

We wondered what those white things were on the horizon in the middle of the photo

Here's a closer look
I looked it up when I got home and it's RAF Menwith Hill which is a communications and intelligence sight for the UK and the USA.

After all that hill walking we took a train to Skipton and walked along the canal side.

  1. LBM you do know how to make me turn green!!

Despite the cloudy day the photos are just lovely particularly the Heather, rocks and greenery, beautiful........If I were an artist I would've packed my paints and brushes.

Interesting to see the RAF site on the horizon.
I was wondering what the post title meant. Thanks for the explanation as I thought I would have to google it to solve the mystery.

Have a great week, looks like it's already off to a good start,

    Claire :}

  2. I miss the purple heather on the moors. Beautful isn't it! Those dome shapes look interesting...

  3. We always called them the 'golf balls' when we were small and that's what my children call them now. Glad you didn't get rained on!! x

  4. Gorgeous photos of the heather, very jealous x

  5. Did you go to Duttons for Buttons? The most wonderful shop - I seem to remember there was a rather nice knitting shop as well!

    Pomona x

  6. It looks like a fantastic walk!
    Very bracing!

Love the heather this time of the year, it's so pretty. They keep harvesing it in the New Forest, and making it into rectangle bales like hay/straw. We kept wondering why until we found out the local brewery collected it.. :o)

    Have a great week Georgia.

  7. Haha we called them the golf balls too, love Ilkley and Skipton, well I love all things Yorkshire in general LOL x

  9. I had relatives in Ilkley - I remember climbing the "Calf" rock as a child and wondering how on earth to get down again!

  10. Love the Heather shot! You make me dream of being there and enjoy the rain and cool air!

  11. Oh my, what breathtakingly beautiful photos. I love Yorkshire! The rock and heather formations are stunning. Makes me want to go back to England right now. It's been four years since my last visit.
